The town of Eildon emerged when the construction of sugarloaf dam was built in the early 1900's and improved upon again in the 1950's and then renamed Lake Eildon. With 515kms of shoreline it is one of the largest artificial lakes in the state, providing water for irrigation and hydro-electricity.

The natural beauty and vast waterways quickly opened up to tourism making it one of Victoria's primary destinations in the warmer months. There is a shopping centre in the town and wide range of accommodation facilities in and around the water.
