Rubicon was established on the timber industry with the the first mill being built in 1908 and powered by a giant water wheel, 1 ½ miles up from the present Rubicon Hydro Power Station. The Township itself is entirely owned by one individual, making it the smallest privately owned township in Victoria. The Rubicon Valley has the most spectacular scenery and has the cobble stone filled river of The Rubicon running through it. The tracks and trails that wind through the mountains make it ideal for horse riding, 4WD, motor cross and deer hunting.
Thornton is just a stones throw away and is the home of the Trout River Opening Festival which celebrates the annual opening of the trout season on the first weekend in September. There is a variety of accommodation, Hotel/Tabaret, Homemade ice cream bar and the best butcher and deli for miles.
